For the last couple of years my dad's health has deteriorated, more from an energy perspective than anything else. Indeed he is aging and the process manifests as
atherosclerosis (renal artery stenosis). But even after these procedures, he kept complaining about
low energy and doctors as usual completely ignored those complaints. We kept doing his blood work, kept checking health, kept dietary restrictions suitable for his age, without any signs of improvement.
After sometime, I decided to do something on this and take a closer look on his overall health status
- His LDL was high constantly
- His Energy level was low substantially
- He was aging faster
With my increasing interest in
Molecular Biology and
Cellular Information Processing, I closed in one critical aspect of cell - Energy Production.
Mitochondria is the main cellular powerhouse dedicated to extract ATP under the overall process of Metabolism.
Mitochondria is also related to the overall aging process, supported with the Mitochondrial Theory of Aging (MTA - http://hplusmagazine.com/2011/10/21/the-mitochondrial-theory-of-aging/)
Mitochondria energy production creates oxidative residues. These residues often causes damage within the cell and to Mitochondria itself, starting a vicious cycle. As time goes on, Mitochondria and cell accumulates more and more DNA damage due to oxidative stress and one of it's manifestation is
atherosclerosis. Discovering this link, I also discovered
Coenzyme Q10, also referred to as CoQ10 or ubiquinone, is a vitamin-like compound which is present in all cells. It occurs naturally in the body and is found in highest amounts in the mitochondria, where cellular energy is created. CoQ10 levels are highest in the hardest-working tissues of the body, especially the heart. Coenzyme Q10 is an antioxidant, that is, it helps to protect cells from damage caused by the body's own free radicals. Somehow I deduced that may be dad's body is not producing enough CoQ10 and supplementing that would be a good idea.
I quickly ordered Nutrilite CoEnzyme Q10 Complex
It was more of an experiment (and that's a great thing about Nutrition. You can experiment better compared to taking pills) and asked dad to complete the course by 2 months. I wasn't expecting anything great, but something good happened. After a month under
CoQ10 supplement, dad reported an overall better health and improved energy. After the completion of the course his
energy level was improved visibly and he seems more active in day-to-day activities.
Sometime you have to take the control your health in your own hands and Nutrition gives you the power to do so.
